[And Sonya, on her end of things, gives a self-conscious little squirm.]
Well, it was my job to have your back. And I wasn't exactly "not an asshole" to you. I think there are other people who deserve debt-repayment a lot more than I do.
A rather than B. Misdirection has never been my problem (ha ha ha, obviously; I'm a lawyer) but...let's just say there's a reason I was never a concert pianist. Or a surgeon.
Well, the "unkind" is more of a sticking point for me than the "illegal." I'm a prosecutor & it's my job to uphold the law, etc etc etc, but there are broad swaths of law which are hot hunks of bullshit.
And trust me. When you work for the Manhattan D.A., you sort of lose your ability to be scandalized.
Then I definitely wouldn't be scandalized, if it's of that caliber. Not that I condone breaking the law at any point etc etc etc, but I've known my fair share of hoods and I've also known my fair share of lawyers and I've always found the former far more likable than the latter. Definitely easier to talk to.
Oh, none taken. Trust me, I do what I do because I have to, but that doesn't mean I'm proud of it. (Also, apt metaphor, especially since they're constantly squabbling about money, often at funerals.)
Oooh, glamorous. (I assume we're talking about the exciting Pyramids-in-Egypt type robbing and not the gross sneaking-into-graveyards-with-a-shovel type robbing.)
Ugh, stop! You're going to make me regret my life choices. The most glamor I ever see is sometimes the guy delivering my sad, eleven P.M. Chinese food is cute.
does it help if I bring up the gunshots. carcrashes. maniacal warlords. insect filled jungles. bombs and charming the trousers off the sort of sweaty palmed clowns you cringe at in the courtroom?

Well, more to the point, I don't want you getting locked up again. You're kind of the client from hell...and I think jail just doesn't suit you.
[A slight pause - ]
You could teach me, though
