Character NAME: Chloe Frazer
Canon & MEDIUM: The Uncharted series of video games (2 & 3)
Canon PULL-POINT: Midway through Uncharted 3, just after escaping Marlowe and Talbot in Syria.
Character AGE: Appx 38 years old.
Character ABILITIES: Highly proficient with a multitude of firearms and explosives, hand to hand combat, free running and general thievery. Chloe is said-- twice throughout Uncharted's history-- to be the best in the business when it comes to driving a getaway car, and indeed lives up to the title when she manages to smash her way through wooden barriers and armored vehicles without so much as a struggle. She is also a dangerously efficient con artist, but that side of her is, of course, less obvious.
Character HISTORY: Chloe is one of the supporting cast in the Uncharted series, playing a major role in Uncharted 2 and 3, and serving as a temporary love interest for the main character, Nathan Drake. The games are played out in an Indiana Jones-esque style, complete with artifacts, dangerous heists and the endless search for lost treasures, and Chloe comes into play in the second game hoping to get her hands on some of that ancient wealth.
Nathan is undeniably intelligent, particularly when it comes to solving historical riddles. It's part of the reason why Chloe directly approaches him to help her--and her current partner, Harry Flynn-- figure out what had become of a vast fleet of ships bearing treasure from Shambhala (or 'Shangri-la') for a wealthy client. The other part being that she and Nathan had been lovers in the past, but he'd abandoned her at some point for an unspecified reason, and she, still wanting to rekindle what they once had, proposes that they find the treasure for Flynn's client, split the money three ways and then ride off into the proverbial sunset without Harry Flynn. Nate, being more than a little jealous over Chloe's relationship with Flynn, reluctantly agrees to the plan, but not without mentioning how upset the guy would be once he realized what was happening. Chloe, unbothered entirely, shrugs it off by saying that Flynn will be fine.
Nate, Chloe and Flynn travel to Turkey to acquire an oil lamp that according to their clues holds the key to finding the sunken fleet. The item is being held in a museum and Flynn and Nate sneak inside to snag it. Nate quickly deciphers the next clue, and is immediately betrayed by Flynn, who sets off the alarm and leaves him for the police. Three months later, after suffering in Turkish prison, Nate is freed by his father figure and mentor, Victor Sullivan-- sent to rescue him by Chloe, who Nate immediately blames for his betrayal and incarceration. Chloe quickly explains that she wasn't responsible for Flynn's betrayal and goes on to tell him that Flynn's client is a terrible war criminal named Lazarevic and that he's currently stuck out in the wilderness trying to scope out the fleet's location due to Flynn's inability to figure out the riddles they'd uncovered. The trio work fast to locate the next relic before Lazarevic, but just when they succeed in their search, Flynn's men close in on their location, and Chloe pulls a gun on both Sully and Nate, betraying them.
Or so it would seem. The two are led off by armed guards, but Chloe attacks them once they're out of Flynn's sight, taking a small gunshot wound to the arm in the process. She tells the pair to run, while she returns to Lazarevic and Flynn to claim that they'd injured her and escaped. Chloe constantly aids Nate in this way throughout the game, helping him fight off enemies and solve various puzzles, and ducking out of view the moment her cover could potentially be blown. They share a volatile, mischievous sort of chemistry, and despite the severity of their situation due to the number of well armed troops Lazarevic has at his disposal, the two remain childishly entertained while just barely dodging death left and right. This, however, is short lived when Nate crosses paths with an old flame of his named Elena Fisher, a news reporter and television personality, doing a report on Lazarevic and the brutality he's using on innocent people in a city torn apart by war. Nate doesn't want to abandon Elena and her cameraman in the thick of things, so they join up, much to Chloe's dismay; Her mood sours, she has to prod and tug at Nate to get his attention away from the bickering he and Elena repeatedly engage in, and finally she gets fed up and forcefully drags him off so that they can focus on their mission.
Things take a turn for the worse when the two return from discovering the location of Shambhala and find Elena fretting worriedly over her cameraman, who's been shot in the stomach. Chloe suggests they leave him behind (numerous times) as Lazarevic's forces are closing in on them, and they'll never survive if they don't move quickly enough. Nate and Elena refuse, which inevitably leads to their capture. Chloe is discovered in the process, but fortunately for her, it's only Flynn that knows the truth about what she's up to, and despite being upset, he says nothing about it to Lazarevic or his men.
Some heavy stuff goes down, Lazarevic and Flynn acquire the location of Shambhala through Nate who makes a daring escape along with Elena. Angsting and fussing and dramatic side-picking ensues for all parties involved. Etc, Etc.
Much later, at the entrance to Shambhala, Flynn is being chastised brutally by Lazarevic for failing to figure out how to open the door (as it is carefully concealed by a number of cryptic puzzles) while Chloe looks on with a mild expression. Once Lazarevic leaves, she quietly tells Flynn the guy is an ass, and Flynn, showing no resentment for anything that's happened between them previously, agrees and leaves her with the artifact needed to open the door, hoping to smooth things over with his employer while he buys them more time.
Nate shows up the moment he leaves and asks for the key. Chloe hesitates, saying she can't explain how the artifact will have gone missing, but Nate insists, confidently telling her she'll figure something out. She relents, handing the item over, and he leaves to solve the last few puzzles barring the path to shambala. Of course, Lazarevic interrupts him with a surplus of armed forces, and demands that he finish opening the path. When Nate refuses, Lazarevic has Chloe brought in and threatens to kill both her and Elena if his demands aren't met. Nathan complies, opening the pathway and allowing them entry into a beautiful, lush paradise hidden away in the Himalayan mountains.
Lazarevic tells Nate, Elena and Chloe to get on their knees, preparing to execute them, but Flynn pleads for Chloe, stating that he had a deal. Lazarevic tells him he doesn't suffer traitors, but agrees to spare her when Flynn threatens to stop cooperating. Just as the soldiers are about to shoot Nate and Elena, the group are attacked by hideous monsters, allowing them yet another opportunity to flee in the chaos. Chloe, held by Flynn, takes the chance to elbow him in the nose and steal his gun, running off with Nate and Elena. They fight their way through the golden city, finding the immense treasure at last, but soon realize it isn't a giant gemstone, it's sap from the tree of life, turned to blue amber. Flynn, suffering a gunshot wound to the chest along with numerous other cuts, stumbles in, mocking them for being too slow. He offers them one final gift from Lazarevic: a live grenade, clutched in his hand. He lets it fall to the ground, killing him and wounding Elena to the point of near death. Chloe carries Elena to safety, tending to her wounds as best as she can while Nate rushes off to confront Lazarevic.
They inevitably succeed and escape as the city collapses. Elena falls unconscious, which leads Nate and Chloe to believe she's dead from her wounds. Nate cries, begging her to stay, while Chloe sadly looks on. Months later Elena is healed, and Chloe, who presumably has stuck around long enough to ensure that she is all right, tells Nate to confess his love for Elena. He responds by telling her she should play the hero more often, but she refuses with a childish little, 'nah', and says that he's going to miss her ass as she walks away proudly.
In Uncharted 3, Chloe, despite choosing to go her own way at the end of Uncharted 2, seems to have warmed up considerably to the idea of teaming up with them. She aids Nate and Sully, acting as their driver and spy as they take on a secret cult, and even spends time sitting about in their apartment as they talk about uncovering their next treasure. They send her and a friend of theirs, named Cutter, to Syria to get part of yet another cryptic clue. The cult follows them there, and Nate and Sully-- worried the pair is captured or worse when they don't answer their cell phones-- try to catch up with them only to find they're both fine; Chloe's phone is broken, and Cutter prepays for his minutes. Cutter is later shot with a dart while the others are distracted, and injected with a mind controlling serum. He gives their enemies what information they need and attacks Nate in a mad frenzy, choking him nearly to death. Sully attempts to shoot Cutter in the head, but Chloe stops him, grabbing Cutter's face and attempting to get him to refocus by looking and listening only to her. It works, and Nate is fortunately freed.
After uncovering the next clue, the four of them are cornered by the cult's agents. Chloe, Nate and Sully leap to safety, but the wooden planks give way behind them, and the gap is too far for Cutter to reach. The cult sets fire to the tower where Cutter stands, and rather than burn to death, he jumps, snapping his leg in the fall. They carry him out to safety, away from the agents of the cult and onto a tour bus that they hijack and drive off in, but Chloe tells Nate this is too serious, even for them. When he won't listen, she comments on the absurdity of his current path, and that it's not about treasure, just his pride. Nate and Sully leave for Yemen, and Chloe stays behind to help Cutter recover.
Character PERSONALITY: Chloe is very much a thief and a con artist, and carries the personality traits to match. She’s charismatic, inviting, charming and more than a little in love with treasure in all its forms. There’s a great sense of self-worth and pride that lurks at the center of her mind, and the importance of survival is something that’s never lost on her. Unfortunately for her friends and allies, it’s not always certain just how important the survival of those around her ranks in comparison when lives are on the line.
As a treasure hunter she’s rarely outmatched, and her past was spent scratching out a living competing against some of the best— and downright worst— in the business. Naturally, when all your time is spent in the company of liars and killers, the idea of human decency slowly bleeds out until it’s gone entirely. Which is exactly where Chloe is when she first arrives in Uncharted 2: Jaded and bitter, and willing to spark a relationship behind Flynn’s back from the moment she has Nate in her sights. Of course, she’s not entirely heartless, as she proposes they split the money evenly between the three of them before taking off for paradise and leaving Flynn behind, but it’s certainly not the kind of decency shared between friends— or lovers for that matter. Chloe doesn’t commit herself to anything that doesn’t pay out for her in the end. She wants Nate, she wants money— lots of it— and she wants this simple heist to pay off without a hitch and a semi-burned bridge with Flynn that she’s certain will heal in time. It’s the closest thing a girl like her will ever get to a happily ever after, and she’s been set on it for quite some time.
By the end of the game, however, things change drastically. What was meant to be a simple equation turns into a heated, desperate nightmare for everyone involved. Flynn sides with a madman far beyond anything they’re capable of dealing with. (Lazarevic makes both Chloe and Flynn look like saints, and when chatting with Nate she isn’t shy about stating how much she utterly despises the guy and would like nothing more than to see him get what’s coming to him.) It’s safe to say she has standards when it comes to maniacs and mass murderers, but it’s only after her cover is blown that she decides to outright support Team Good Guys.
Of course since then, surrounded by people who make a habit out of showing kindness and compassion to one another on a regular basis, Chloe has evolved into someone more willing to take risks for those closest to her. She protects Cutter when Sully moves to shoot him, she shows genuine concern for him when he breaks his leg and even chastises Nate for being selfish, hoping to dissuade him from getting himself killed when he’s in over his head. Instead of walking off as a lone wolf, she’s accepted the idea of joining a dysfunctional little family that's willing to reciprocate what is given to them, and she honestly seems to enjoy their company when she lays about in their apartment, cracking jokes and offering the occasional fist bump. Still somewhat childish, still Chloe, but a Chloe who isn’t expecting the very worst from the world, and wants very much to help defend what good she could find.

Third PERSON:
Agitated hisses echoed off the sides of the cavern walls. Somewhere behind Chloe, in the cracks of a crevice just barely large enough for the average human to squeeze through, Cutter was switching off between fits of angry words and pleading whimpers. It was no secret that he hated tight spaces. He'd carried on about them for hours after having to worm his way through a narrow passageway with Nate and Sully in London's underground, and it didn't help matters that he was currently out of his mind thanks to a particularly potent drug that was wreaking havoc on his system.
Chloe felt for him, she did, but with countless agents crawling the courtyard outside they didn't have time to stop and wait for Cutter to come to his senses before pressing on. She and Victor had moved ahead first, while Nate had stayed behind to ensure Cutter would keep inching forward through the more claustrophobic portions of their journey. So it wasn't until the muttering turned to complete silence that the both of them realized something was off.
After a moment or two without the slightest response they turned back, only to find Cutter standing over Nate with his hands wrapped around his throat, choking the absolute last bit of life out of him. With little time left to react, and with panic erasing almost every bit of reasoning she could possibly manage, Chloe rushed to Cutter's side, fingers reaching for his face. In the dim torchlight the glint of Victor's pistol barely registered, but she heard him call out for her to get back, and her focus shifted enough to realize just exactly what he meant to do.
"No-- don't!" She yelled, just before grabbing hold of Cutter's jaw, yanking him forcefully towards her and away from the sight of Nate's pain stricken expression. In moments it would be too late for one of them, or both, but if there was any hope at all of saving Cutter before Victor put him down, she had to make one last attempt at appealing to what was left of his sanity beneath the cult's drug-induced nightmare.
"Charlie! Charlie-- you're killing Nate. You've gotta listen to me, okay?"
He shook his head, tried to pull away from her, but she held him fast, fought against the fearful spasms of his muscles.
"You are killing Nate--"
She heard coughing beneath her; her grip eased, and Cutter retreated away from Chloe to lean, trembling, against the far wall. Nate crawled to his feet with her help, shuddering and wheezing as he attempted to catch his breath through clenched teeth.
Whatever it was they were dealing with was more dangerous than they'd realized. In minutes, right beneath their own noses, they'd nearly lost two of their own without weapons or gunfire. Anyone capable of this kind of manipulation was someone far beyond their abilities to best-- at least not without a cost. And at the sight of Nate and Cutter crouched wearily in opposite corners of the room, she felt more unsettled than she had in a very, very long time. Because whatever that cost was, she was beginning to think it wasn't worth it.
